Maybe it’s obvious, or maybe it isn’t. The first thing to do is follow the drips, turn off the nearest shutoff valve, and either fix it or call your plumber. With leaks, it’s best to be safe than sorry and make sure the problem is fixed quickly to reduce damages to your home.

Clogged drains are a really common plumbing problem, that nearly everyone experiences. The number one reason why drains get clogged are from putting things down them, that don’t belong.  Here are the most common items you should avoid putting down your drains.

    1. Avoid flushing the following down your toilets: Any paper products that are not toilet paper; sanitary products or diapers;  hygiene products such as flossers, q-tips, cotton balls or pads; and cat litter.
    2. Things to avoid putting down your garbage disposal and/or kitchen sink: Apple or potato peels; coffee grounds; large food scraps; anything plastic or metal.

In the wintertime, Virginia weather can produce temperatures in the teens, which means homeowners should take steps to prevent frozen pipes.  When water freezes, it expands, which can cause pipes to burst. This can cause major (and costly) problems for your home.  Rapid drops in temperature, poor installation and improperly set thermostats are the biggest culprits behind freezing pipes.

First, check to make sure you don’t have a toilet in your home that is running or leaking.  Check the water level in the toilet’s tank, if the water is overflowing into the overflow pipe, then you may need to adjust the valve to stop the flow about an inch below the overflow pipe.  Regular maintenance is always recommended to prevent these types of things from occurring, and to help avoid costly water bills.

Lights often flicker when your HVAC kicks in or when you use certain appliances. This could be an issue that could be resolved by your utility provider and you can ask them for assistance! If this doesn’t solve the problem have us come do an inspection.

Most water heaters should be replaced every 8-10 years. Some electrical water heaters can last 10-15 years. You should always have one of our professionals come do an inspection and provide you with their opinion.
